Council Endorses ‘Withers Lane’ Road Naming Proposal Following Strong Community Support
Ararat Rural City Council has resolved to progress the official naming of an unnamed road off Moyston–Dunkeld Road, Moyston, as Withers Lane following a thorough community consultation process.
During September and October this year, Council invited the community to provide formal feedback regarding its intention to name the road Prospectors Lane.
Of the 21 submissions received, the majority recommended Withers Lane in recognition of the Withers family, who have been part of the Moyston community since the early 1850s. Submissions also proposed alternative names, with Atkins Lane and Prospectors Lane receiving some support.
Reflecting the views shared by residents and stakeholders, Council will now begin the formal process to name the road Withers Lane. This includes a further period of consultation, engagement with adjoining landowners, and compliance with the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria, ensuring the name’s clear local link and no duplication within a 30-kilometre radius.
Formally naming the road as Withers Lane will ensure emergency services, postal delivery, and utility providers can accurately identify properties.
Mayor Cr Bob Sanders welcomed the outcome, noting, “The Council is grateful for the community’s contributions and sees the naming of Withers Lane as a meaningful recognition of local history. We appreciate the thoughtful input from residents, and we remain dedicated to making decisions that reflect our community’s voice.”
Residents are invited to participate in the next stage of consultation, which will be promoted through Engage Ararat and direct engagement with those living near the proposed Withers Lane location.
