Located at the foothills of the Grampians and surrounded by picturesque mountains and grazing country, Ararat Rural City is the centrepiece in a region of tranquil and inspiring natural attractions, including the Grampians National Park, Mount Langi Ghiran, Mount Cole, Mount Buangor, Ararat Hills Regional Park, Lake Fyans and the Pyrenees Ranges.
Situated 200km west of Melbourne on the Western Highway, Ararat is a major regional service centre in Victoria’s mid-west with direct road and rail linkages to Melbourne, Ballarat and Adelaide. The city is characterised by huge horizons, spectacular mountain scapes and a vibrant sense of community health and wellbeing.
Ararat is the largest city in the region with a population of approximately 9,000. Originally founded by the Chinese in 1857 en-route to the Ballarat Goldfields from Robe in South Australia, they knew they’d struck gold in more ways than one when they arrived! The Gum Sam Chinese Heritage Centre, designed in the traditional style of southern Chinese architecture, celebrates Ararat’s Chinese heritage.
Fast forward to today and the untold wealth of such a vibrant and picturesque region is waiting for you to make it your home. Enjoy the world class wineries and burgeoning café scene of the region.
Other population centres include the rural towns of Willaura, Lake Bolac, Moyston, Pomonal, Buangor and Elmhurst. Ararat is the principal service centre containing the widest range and highest level of retail, commercial, community and recreational facilitates and services in the region.
