Cr Gwenda Allgood (Mayor)
Tell us about your background? (Family, career, professional experiences)
My Family arrived in Ararat in 1950’s. My Father took over the family farm which has been in our family since the early 1800’s. I meet and married my husband Morris Allgood in 1965. All my immediate family still live and work in Ararat. I was first elected to the Ararat City Council in 1982. I have served 5 times as Mayor during this period.
What are your most enjoyable hobbies/interests?
I spend as much time with my family as possible. I like to follow their sporting progress, and their many diverse interests and achievements very closely. I like to think it is quality time for all of us.
I like to help out volunteering with different groups and I enjoy fund raising for different causes my family is involved in.
What do you see as the biggest strengths within the municipality of the Ararat Rural City and what is your vision for the next four years?
I like to listen to people and arrive at a decision that I believe is fair to everyone. I am always very conscious of how and where we spend Ratepayers money.
Ararat could accommodate many more people into the area with the infrastructure that is available with the amount of schools, sporting clubs and importantly housing opportunities already in place. Ararat is also very well placed in the Aged Care area.
To begin preparing for the bypass to make sure Ararat is firmly placed in people’s minds and memories to visit the smaller towns and especially to our local tourist attractions.
