Mayoral & Councillor Allowances Review

Section 74 of the Local Government Act 1989 (the Act) provides that a Council must  review and determine the level of the Councillor and Mayoral allowances within the period of 6 months after a general election or by the next 30 June, whichever is later.

Ararat Rural City Council proposes to set the Councillor and Mayoral Allowances for the entire Council term (ie until November 2020) at the maximum levels for a Category 1 Council, as determined by the Minister for Local Government and published in the Victorian Government Gazette from time to time.

The maximum allowances, currently $19,350 for Councillors and $57,812 for the Mayor, will be subject to any variations or adjustments made by the Minister during the four year Council term.

An amount equivalent to the superannuation guarantee contribution under Commonwealth taxations legislation (currently 9.5%) is payable in addition to the allowance amounts.

All submissions received on or before 16 December 2016 will be considered by Council in accordance with Section 223 of the Act.

Any person making a submission is entitled to state in the submission that he or she wishes to appear in person, or to be represented by a person specified in the submission, at a meeting to be heard in support of the submission. Notice of the meeting date and time will be given to each person who has lodged a submission
