Ararat Rural City Council to celebrate Australia Day

Posted Thursday 4 January, 08:31am

Community members from Ararat and surrounding districts are invited to join the celebrations this Australia Day – Friday, January 26, 2018.

Official proceedings will begin at 12 noon with a free Lions Club of Ararat BBQ lunch at Alexandra Oval Community Centre, followed by formalities commencing at 1pm with keynote address by the Australia Day Ambassador, award presentations and performances by the Ararat City Band.

Each year Ararat Rural City Council presents awards to local citizens and community groups that have made outstanding contributions to the community. Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Glenda McLean said new awards introduced in 2017 covered a broader spectrum.

“We had great success with the format change last year to our awards, recognising Multicultural Harmony, Community Spirit and Inspired Healthy Living, as well as the big one – Ararat Ambassador,” Cr McLean said.

“The Ararat Ambassador award will go to someone who has demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the Ararat Rural City community, as well as undertaken activities, which have short and long term benefits for others.”

This year’s Australia Day Ambassador will be Bill Kusznirczuk, one of Australia’s leading Urban and Regional planners. Mr Kusxnirczuk will share his extensive experience and knowledge in all aspects of planning, building, property development and how cities, rural and regional areas should look in the future. He is also a regular commentator on radio, TV and in print media.

Following official proceedings, family pool parties are also planned at the Willaura, Lake Bolac and Ararat Outdoor Pools, with activities and games to commence from 2pm.

“There's something for the whole family to enjoy this Australia Day!” Cr McLean said.
