Melbourne Cup to visit Ararat

Community members will have the chance to get up close and hold the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup when it is hosted by Ararat Turf Club on Monday, October 9.

The iconic 18-carat gold cup will pass through the region just 28 days out from ‘the Race that Stops the Nation’, as part of the 15th Annual Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.

Festivities kick off at Gum San Great Hall at 10am, where the cup will be on display as part of the Robe to Riches Exhibition until 11am.

At 12pm a parade will pass through Barkly Street before finishing at Alexandra Oval Community Centre. The public can again take a closer look and be photographed with the Cup from 2.30pm-4pm at Alexandra Oval and meet former Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mick Robins who led champion stallion Rain Lover to victory in 1968 and 1969.

Ararat Rural City is one of only four Victorian towns chosen as a destination outside of Melbourne for the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.

VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott said the Cup is an Australian cultural icon so it’s only fitting that the trophy and its rich history is taken on a journey to meet the people.

“The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour celebrates the stories intrinsically linked to the Cup and its contribution to Australia’s cultural and historical heritage,” Mrs Elliott said.

“Since the Tour began in 2003, we have delighted in bringing communities together in the shared history and magic of this extraordinary phenomenon.”
