The municipality is peppered with beautiful towns and places telling the story of a rich and varied history of the physical development of the municipality since first contact between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. This includes prosperous pastoral leases and thriving towns that have serviced the district for over 150 years.
Council has undertaken a number of studies across the municipality to identify sites of significance including the Ararat Heritage Study 1994, Ararat Heritage Study Review 2001 and most recently the Rural Ararat Heritage Study 2015 for the small townships and rural areas of the municipality.
It is important to recognise and protect these Heritage sites for current and futures and many of these sites are included in the Heritage Overlay under the Ararat Planning Scheme or listed on the State Heritage Register.
Council also provides a Heritage Advisory service through funding from Heritage Victoria for a registered architect to provide guidance and assistance on how to care for those places in the most appropriate way.
