Council have a range of animals currently available for adoption at our animal shelter.

Ararat Rural City Council's local animal shelter is at 19 Pound Lane, Ararat, and is open by appointment.

As a facility of Ararat Rural City Council, the pound supports a no-euthanasia policy for animals who are suitable for rehousing.

Council offers a very reasonable adoption fee of $100 for dogs and $50 for cats which covers the cost of desexing, initial vaccinations, and microchipping.

All animals up for adoption have been thoroughly health checked and temperament tested. They are all desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, worm and flea treated and are looking for a second chance at a happy and healthy life.

See below to view animals currently available for adoption from our shelter, along with adoption application forms for download. We encourage you to call our community safety team to arrange a meet and greet if any of these animals look like they would make the perfect addition to your family!

Frequently Asked Adoption Questions
Can I adopt an animal from the council pound?

Yes! We absolutely do adopt animals from our care into loving homes. Our goal is always to give surrendered, abandoned, or trapped animals a second chance through safe and responsible rehoming.

How do I apply to adopt an animal?

Please read ‘Thinking About Getting a Pet’ first to make sure you can responsibly look after a dog or cat.  Then fill out an Adoption Application Form (dog or cat) to help us understand your home environment, lifestyle, and experience with pets so we can find the best possible match for both you and the animal.

What happens after I submit my adoption form?

Our team will review your application and may contact you for a quick chat or home visit. We work hard to find suitable placements - it’s all about giving each animal the best chance at a happy, lasting home.

Where do the animals come from?

Animals in our care may have been surrendered by owners, abandoned, or trapped as strays. Every animal is assessed, given veterinary attention, and cared for before being made available for adoption.

What should I expect when bringing a new animal home?

Every animal needs time to settle into their new environment. Be patient and understanding - moving homes is a big change! To help you, we’ve put together these Tips for Settling Your Pet into its New Home

Do you work with other animal agencies?

Yes. We have agreements with adoption agencies across the state, and we work closely with them to ensure the best outcomes for every animal. Our priority is to house animals directly through Council’s own adoption program whenever possible.

What if I’m struggling to care for my pet?

You’re not alone. Not all owners are irresponsible - sometimes, people just need a bit of help or advice. We can offer training tips and resources that can make a big difference in the long run. Please reach out before things become unmanageable.

Does Council really care about these animals?

Absolutely. Every member of our Community Safety team is committed to animal welfare and works tirelessly to ensure that each lost animal is quickly returned to its owners and that every animal up for adoption also finds a finds a safe, loving home. Again, we encourage pet owners to register and microchip their pets so together we can protect their welfare.
