Municipal Building Surveyor

About the role
The Municipal Building Surveyor assesses and determines building permit applications to ensure compliance with the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018, the National Construction Code (NCC) Volume 2 and relevant Australian Standards. The role balances statutory responsibilities with practical, customer-focused advice for builders, designers and the community.

What you’ll do

  • Assess and determine building permit applications and review plans and documentation for compliance.
  • Issue permits, requests for information and determinations, and monitor applications to meet statutory timeframes.
  • Provide clear, practical advice to applicants, builders, designers and community members.
  • Manage complex and non-compliant matters and contribute to enforcement or appeal processes when required.
  • Maintain accurate records and support continuous improvement of Council’s building services.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualification in Building Surveying or related discipline and professional registration.
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018, NCC (Volume 2) and relevant Australian Standards.
  • Experience managing building permit applications and applying risk-based decision making to compliance matters.
  • Well-developed communication and negotiation skills with the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to meet statutory timeframes while maintaining accuracy.
  • Current Victorian driver’s licence.
