New Road Upgrades Set to Improve Road Safety in Ararat
Preliminary infrastructure design concepts for a new road safety program were presented to Ararat Rural City Council at Tuesday’s Council Meeting.
Council has been working with consulting partner SMEC to develop a series of safety upgrade projects in Ararat that will address key areas of local road safety concern, including the installation:
- A raised intersection with mountable roundabout at Queen St & Moore St.
- Intersection safety improvements at View Point St & High Street.
- A raised intersection at Vincent St & Alexandra Ave, and pedestrian priority crossing between Alexandra Ave and the Alexandra Gardens.
- A raised pedestrian crossings at Moore St & Princes St, Ingor St & King Street, and View Point St, Tobin St & Taylor St
These projects, delivered under the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, are designed to improve road safety across the municipality.
The program matches local councils with consulting partners to support the scope and develop the design of crucial road safety projects. Final detailed designs are due to be completed by the end of July 2025, with works due to be completed by October 2026.
The Safe Local Roads and Streets Program is a joint initiative between the State Government’s Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission, aimed at supporting Victorian councils to implement safe infrastructure improvements across local road networks.
“Keeping our community safe through ongoing road improvement initiatives is a top priority for Council,” says Ararat Rural City Council CEO, Dr Tim Harrison.
“This series of upgrade projects will deliver significant safety improvements to our local road network.”
