Response to media request: Rubbish Dumping in Ararat Rural City

Ararat Rural City Council would like to reassure the community that illegal dumping is not a significant issue across the municipality, with only isolated instances reported from time to time.

While illegal dumping is a serious problem in some urban areas, Ararat’s parklands and open spaces remain largely clean thanks to the pride residents take in their environment. Most cases Council encounters are minor, such as occasional random dumps or items left on nature strips, such as unwanted furniture or toys.

Because dumping tends to occur infrequently, Council does not maintain a dedicated budget for collection.

Comment that can be attributed to Dr Tim Harrison

“Council encourages residents to take advantage of local waste and recycling options rather than leaving items on the street. The Ararat Transfer Station is one of the most affordable in Victoria - significantly cheaper than larger centres such as Ballarat - and continues to be well-used by the community. There is no evidence that transfer station fees are contributing to dumping behaviour locally, and usage patterns have remained steady.”

Residents who see illegal dumping or witness someone disposing of waste unlawfully are encouraged to report it to Council so the matter can be dealt with promptly.

What should someone do when they spot someone dumping:

  • Your own safety is paramount. Don’t confront people. If you can get a number plate, please do, and report it via Snap Send Solve or the Customer Service team at Ararat Rural City Council.

What should someone do when they spot dumped rubbish:

  • Snap Send Solve is a great way to report dumped rubbish, because it geo-locates the exact location of the rubbish, and is incredibly helpful for our team when locations can be had to describe or pinpoint exactly.
  • People can also report to our customer service team, who will arrange clean up. Ph: (03) 5355 0200 or Email: [email protected]
