Technical Production Trainee
Ararat Rural City Council is looking for an enthusiastic Technical Production Trainee to join the team at the iconic Ararat Town Hall, supporting live performances and events while completing a Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who loves live entertainment, enjoys hands-on work and wants to build real skills in the performing arts and events industry.
About the role
As a Technical Production Trainee, you will work across Ararat Town Hall and other performing arts spaces in the municipality, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how live shows, community events and performances come together. Across the 12‑month traineeship, you will gain experience in lighting, sound, staging, vision and front-of-house support, while being part of a small, supportive team that values creativity, safety and great customer service.
What you’ll be doing
You will assist with the setup, operation and pack-down of events, including staging, lighting, audio, vision and venue layout. Your day-to-day work may involve unloading and loading equipment, building stages, organising seating to meet safety requirements, welcoming guests, checking tickets, operating point-of-sale systems and helping to keep venues clean, organised and show-ready. You will also support stocktakes, equipment checks and basic troubleshooting, always with guidance from experienced technical and performing arts staff.
Training and support
This is a genuine earn-while-you-learn opportunity: during your traineeship you will complete a Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services through a Registered Training Organisation, with time and support allocated for your formal study. Training will combine on-the-job learning with structured coursework, giving you both the practical and theoretical foundations needed for a future career in technical production. Guidance and advice are always available from supervisors, and you will be encouraged to develop your interests in areas such as audio, lighting, staging or customer experience.
Who we’re looking for
This role suits someone who is hands-on, curious and willing to learn, rather than someone who already has technical qualifications. You will bring enthusiasm, reliability and a genuine interest in live events, along with good communication skills, basic computer skills and a commitment to great customer service. The role includes evening and weekend work in line with performance schedules, so flexibility is important.
