Mt William Road Upgrade
Ararat Rural City Council’s Mt William Road Upgrade – Stage 1 delivered a safer, more reliable freight and community route servicing farming communities around Yalla-Y-Poora and the wider Mt William area. Supported by $5 million from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and a Council contribution of $1.25 million, the project had a total value of approximately $6.25 million.
The upgrade responded to long-standing safety and access concerns raised by grain growers, local residents and industry, particularly around harvest time when heavy vehicle movements peak. Following the work of Council’s Road Capital Working Group and the identification of Mt William Road as a priority freight route in the Council Asset Plan 2022–32, Stage 1 focused on reconstructing and widening sections of deteriorated pavement, improving drainage, and sealing and line-marking key segments. These works addressed potholing, narrow seals and uneven surfaces, significantly improving driving conditions and reducing maintenance demands.
Construction involved the excavation and removal of degraded seal and pavement, installation of new base layers, safety barriers, and associated signage to better manage vehicle movements. Council worked closely with local landholders and road users to minimise disruption during construction, using on-site signage, direct engagement and digital updates to keep the community informed. On completion, the upgraded section between key intersecting local roads now provides a smoother, safer journey for both light and heavy vehicles, enhancing access for agricultural freight, tourists and local communities alike.
The project has delivered measurable benefits: improved road safety for all users, more efficient freight operations for local agribusiness, and enhanced connectivity between rural communities and regional centres. By strengthening one of the municipality’s strategic rural roads, the Mt William Road Upgrade supports long-term economic development and reinforces Council’s broader commitment to maintaining a resilient “rural road backbone” for the region.
