Ararat Pound & Shelter opens the doors for cat and kitten adoption day

Residents are encouraged to open their hearts and homes by adopting a kitten or a cat at an upcoming adoption day at Ararat Rural City Council’s Pound & Shelter on Thursday 16 April from 10am to 4pm.

Not only will you have the chance to adopt a kitten or cat, but you can also ask Council’s Community Safety Team about pet microchipping, registration, desexing, and general animal care.

At the adoption day, kittens can be adopted at a cost of $100 each and adult cats for $50. All adoption fees include one year pet registration with Council, desexing (or desexing vouchers if the animal is too young right now), microchipping, vaccination, and worming.

Mayor Councillor Bob Sanders said the adoption day was a good opportunity for the community to meet all the cats at the same time and get to know the local Community Safety Team who are dedicated to animal welfare in the municipality.

“Our team does a really good job caring for lost, found, abandoned, and surrendered animals and go to great lengths for them,” said Cr Sanders. “I know they’re really looking forward to seeing these cats find good homes and are keen to provide pet care information to residents and answer questions.”

Registration and adoption forms will be available at the adoption day, so residents can take their new pet home once paperwork is completed. If you are likely to adopt a cat, please bring a suitable carrier with you.

Cr Sanders added that residents could bring their cat or dog along to the adoption day to have their microchip scanned to ensure contact details were current.

“Council has assisted with dozens of lost and found animals during the past 12 months, and unfortunately, in almost all cases, these pets have not been microchipped, or the contact details are old,” he said. “Most of the animals also weren’t registered with Council, which makes it hard to return them home. This is a good opportunity to make sure all your contact details are correct.”

The Ararat Pound & Shelter is located at 19 Pound Lane, Ararat.
