Bluestone wall at Alexandra Gardens restored to former glory

Works to repair a bluestone retaining wall and walking path on Vincent Street near Alexandra Gardens is now complete.

Ararat Rural City Council worked with local contractors Accurate Bricks on the project to restore and stabilise the retaining wall with a new concrete footpath. The works are delivered as part of Council’s capital works program to improve the safety and connectivity of footpaths in public spaces.

The new retaining wall features bluestone re-used from the previous wall which runs 90 metres in length on Vincent Street, starting from Girdlestone Street and continuing south to the entrance of Alexandra Gardens.

Preparation works included careful removal of tree roots impacting the retaining wall, installation of a root barrier, cleaning the original bluestone blocks and removal of the existing asphalt path. To stabilise the wall, a new retaining wall has been built along the inside of the bluestone barrier with an aggregate drain to remove excess water.

Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said Council crews have been overseeing the strengthening and reassembling of the bluestone retaining wall to its original form, ensuring the wall is preserved for the community to enjoy for years to come.

“Alexandra Gardens is a much-loved spot for locals – it plays an important role in fostering happy, healthy and active communities. Repairing retaining walls and footpaths surrounding the park ensures the local community can keep healthy, stay connected and make the most of our public spaces,” Dr Tim said.

“Preserving the character of the bluestone wall while securing it, along with a new footpath not only improves visitor experiences but supports the health of natural and cultural landscapes.”
