Council’s Free Supported Playgroup Empowering Local Families Through Everyday Play

Local families across the Ararat Rural City region are continuing to benefit from Council’s free Supported Playgroup program, designed to help young children build early communication skills, confidence, and strong relationships through play.

Funded by the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) and delivered by Ararat Rural City Council, Supported Playgroup provides targeted, early-years guidance for eligible children under five and their parents or carers.

Facilitated by an experienced early years professional, the program offers two weekly group sessions during school terms, as well as personalised, one-on-one Home Coaching sessions.

Sessions also feature Council’s certified therapy dog, Hunny, who is always on hand to provide emotional comfort, extra cuddles, and a welcoming environment for families.

The sessions incorporate evidence-based early learning frameworks that focus on early language, play, and emotional development including smalltalk, Peep Learning Together, and Peep TALK, which give parents practical tools to foster learning and development in their everyday routines at home.

Beyond supporting child development, Supported Playgroup focuses on parent well-being by connecting local families with peer networks, local support services, and self-care resources. In-home coaching and tailored, one-on-one home visits are also available for eligible families needing extra support.

“Our Supported Playgroup is a really fantastic initiative that gives local families a safe, welcoming space to connect, learn, and build strong foundations for their children’s early development,” said Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Bob Sanders.

“Having Hunny as part of the team adds something truly special. She brings so much warmth and comfort to the room, helping both kids and parents feel relaxed and supported from the moment they walk through the door. We’re incredibly proud to lead the way in Victoria with this progressive approach to early childhood support.”
