Drivers reminded to follow Loading Zone parking rules
Local drivers are being reminded to better understand and comply with Loading Zone parking restrictions, as Ararat Rural City Council’s Community Safety team increases parking enforcement across the municipality.
Council’s Community Safety officers have issued several infringements in recent weeks, prompting the reminder to ensure drivers are aware of who can legally use Loading Zones and why the rules are in place.
Loading Zones are designated areas intended for short-term use by vehicles actively loading or unloading goods. They are primarily used by couriers, delivery trucks and businesses that rely on regular access to premises throughout the day.
Council is reminding drivers that:
• Loading Zones are not general parking spaces
• Being a shop owner or customer does not automatically permit use of a Loading Zone
• Loading Zones cannot be used for quick errands, such as grocery shopping
• Vehicles must meet the legal requirements to park in a Loading Zone and signed time limits must be adhered to.
Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said some drivers who have received a verbal warning, or an infringement notice for repeat behaviour, claimed they were unaware of the restrictions.
“Council is encouraging all motorists to familiarise themselves with parking signage to avoid infringements,” said Dr Harrison. “With a full Community Safety team now active, parking enforcement has increased. Our officers will issue warnings where appropriate, but infringements may apply where breaches continue. The rules exist to ensure fair access for delivery vehicles, support local businesses and maintain safety for all road users.”
Loading Zones play an important role in keeping footpaths clear, traffic flowing and deliveries running smoothly throughout the day. Council encourages drivers to use nearby standard parking bays when available.
