Every Property Plays A Part in Fire Preparedness

Ararat Rural City Council is encouraging residents to make the most of the longer spring evenings and begin preparing their homes, gardens, farms and rural properties for the coming fire season.

Preparing a property can involve mowing or slashing long grass, removing leaves and bark from around buildings, cleaning gutters, pruning low or overhanging branches and clearing rubbish and garden waste.

Residents on farms, bush blocks and larger properties should also check firebreaks and access tracks, safely store firewood and other combustible materials, and test water tanks, pumps, hoses and firefighting equipment.

Mayor Cr Bob Sanders said preparing for fire was part of the seasonal routine of living in the region. “We are fortunate to live in a wonderful part of Victoria, but the warmer months bring responsibilities for all of us,” Cr Sanders said. “Getting fire ready is part of the season. Just as we prepare our gardens, farms and homes for summer, we need to take some practical steps to reduce fire hazards and make sure our equipment is ready.

“Our residents do a fantastic job each year of maintaining their properties and looking out for their neighbours. This process is not about punishment. It is about supporting the community as a whole and recognising that every resident has a part to play.

“When each of us clears long grass, removes potential hazards or checks a pump and water supply, those individual efforts add up to a safer and better-prepared community.”

Council will undertake its annual fire prevention inspections later in the season. Residents are encouraged not to wait for an inspection and to begin preparing their properties now. Council’s established process includes advisory contact where appropriate, inspections and Fire Prevention Notices when identified hazards need to be addressed.

To assist with the cost of preparing properties, Council offers green waste vouchers to eligible properties in areas assessed as having a high to extreme fire risk. Council is encouraging eligible residents to take advantage of the support available.

“These vouchers are provided to make it easier and more affordable for residents in higher-risk areas to clear green waste from their properties,” Cr Sanders said. “If you’re unsure whether you qualify, contact Council’s Customer Service team and they will be happy to assist.”

Residents seeking advice about property preparation or green waste voucher eligibility can contact Ararat Rural City Council’s Customer Service team on (03) 5355 0200.
