Gallery Artist Talk with contemporary artist Stefan Gevers

Ararat Rural City residents will have the opportunity to hear from one of Australia’s leading contemporary watercolour artists in Ararat Gallery TAMA’s series of behind-the-scenes artist talks.

Coinciding with the WAMA Art Prize and Grampians Brushes, Melbourne-based artist Stefan Gevers will take participants through his creative journey of taking inspiration from landscapes and working with watercolour on Friday, September 8.

Born in The Netherlands and graduated from the ARTEZ College of Art in 1999, Stefan Gevers works can be found in the public collections of the National Australia Bank, Artbank, Banyule Council, Peter McCallum Art Collection, State Library of Victoria and State Library of Queensland.

Ararat Gallery Coordinator, Katy Mitchell said audiences can expect to hear insights into the methods Stefan uses and his process of working with watercolour in a contemporary way.

“Artist talks are a wonderful way to connect with artists on a deeper level – to hear about their evolution and artmaking process gives great insight into their work,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Visitors will have a chance to view Stefan’s works up close and experience texture with watercolour, which is an important part of his work.”

Describing his work, artist Stefan Gevers said, “Inspired by the drama of light and inherent patterns in nature, my contemporary watercolour paintings display a lightness of touch.”

“With delicate but deliberate lines directing the compositions, there is an element of unexpectedness.”

“For me, it is not about mastering the medium but instead, recognising clearly what watercolour wants to do all by itself and learning to collaborate with it, to work in tandem – artist and medium – so that the outcome rewards both,” he continued.

“I’m excited to share my process of working with watercolour with the Ararat community.”

Join Ararat Gallery TAMA for their next Artist Talk with Stefan Gevers on 8 September at 11am. Free entry, with bookings essential for seating capacity. Visit www.araratgallerytama.com.au to save your spot.
