Reminder to Pet Owners: Responsible Dog Ownership Benefits Everyone

Ararat Rural City Council is reminding residents about the importance of responsible dog ownership following a recent increase in wandering dogs and dog attacks in the community.

Dogs are much-loved companions and members of many local households, and Council is encouraging all pet owners to take active steps to ensure their dogs remain safe, secure, and a positive part of the community.

One of the most pressing concerns is the number of dogs found roaming off-lead or unaccompanied. This poses a risk both to the public and to the dog itself, with incidents ranging from aggression and vehicle hazards to injuries that could have been avoided.

“Dog ownership is about more than loving your pet,” said Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Jo Armstrong, “It is about understanding the impact that pet behaviour has on our neighbours, on public spaces, and on community safety. A well-trained, well-secured dog is not only a happier pet, but also a better friend to the people and pets it meets.”

Council makes the following recommendations for dog-owning households:

  • Registering dogs with Council is not only a legal requirement, it’s the simplest way to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Registration fees also support dog facilities such as the popular park near the gardens and the upcoming off-leash park at the former Centenary Oval site.
  • Training is key. Socialisation and training help your pets to be comfortable in a range of settings and behave appropriately around people and other animals.
  • Check your fences. Unlocked gates and gaps in fences are a risk to your pet and we recommend residents make sure your property boundaries are escape-proof.
  • Use leads when walking your pets.
  • Pick up after your dog.

“Our dogs rely on us to make decisions in their best interests, and in the interests of our community,” said Dr Harrison. “If everyone keeps that in mind, we will see fewer incidents and a stronger sense of respect between dog owners and the wider community.”
