Septic upgrades set to support Mininera and Buangor recreation reserves for years to come

Ararat Rural City Council is progressing planned improvements to wastewater infrastructure at Mininera and Buangor recreation reserves, with a tender for new septic systems now closed and evaluation underway.

The upgrades form part of Council’s broader program of works to ensure local facilities continue to meet contemporary standards and support community use into the future.

At Mininera Recreation Reserve, Council will replace an outdated effluent dam that no longer meets current environmental and public health requirements. The new system will be installed ahead of a planned toilet block replacement so that the upgraded amenities can connect to modern, compliant wastewater infrastructure from day one.

Buangor Recreation Reserve will receive a larger commercial-grade system that brings together the existing septics servicing the new sports pavilion and the Cobb & Co venue into a single, more efficient 10,000 litre tank. The upgraded system will include digital monitoring alerts and be securely fenced, supporting safer, more reliable operation while catering for current and future use of the site.

Ararat Rural City Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said the works reflected Council’s commitment to getting the basics right in small communities. “These sorts of projects are not glamorous, but they are the foundation that allows our sporting clubs, event organisers, and community groups to get on with what they do best, which is bringing people together,” Dr Harrison said. “By investing in modern, fit-for-purpose wastewater systems at Mininera and Buangor, we are setting these reserves up to serve local residents and visitors well into the future.”

Dr Harrison said Council looked forward to confirming the successful tenderer and moving into delivery. “Once the contract is awarded, we will be in a position to share more detail with the community about timelines and any temporary impacts on reserve users,” he said. “The end result will be more reliable, compliant infrastructure that supports the long-term use of these important community hubs.”
